7 Tips for Flawless Skin and Makeup
Posted on March 13 2018
The key to a flawless makeup application isn’t in your makeup, your brushes or even your setting powder. It’s all in how you prep your skin before you apply your makeup. Dry flaky skin won’t look flawless no matter how much makeup you cake on your face. Only by ensuring your face is hydrated, exfoliated and primed will your makeup (and skin) truly look flawless. Here are a few tips from our professional beauty team on how to ensure your makeup looks and stays smooth and consistent.
Cleansing your skin is essential to every person’s day, whether you wear makeup or not. Cleansing removes all the toxins and dirt your skin is exposed to during the day and helps to purify the skin and prevent build up in the pores. Facial cleansers are specifically designed for the skin on your face, which is thinner than that of your body. All skin care cleansers offer different properties such as exfoliation, soothing for sensitive or dry skin, or detoxifying for oily and acne prone skin.
Exfoliating your skin is key to ensuring you remove all those dead skin cells and flaky bits that become more visible when you apply your foundation. By giving your face a good exfoliation at least once a week with a more aggressive exfoliator or daily with a milder exfoliator, your skin will remain smooth and you'll get glowing skin. Exfoliating your face not only helps with the finished look, it also promotes cell turnover and aides in purifying your skin for a more even complexion.
Face masks come in many different forms, all of which offer unique properties and serve a different purpose. Sheet masks for example are on the rise in skin care trends and often consist of a paper or microfiber sheet soaked in a serum or essence. The sheet mask has holes for your eyes, nose and mouth and is easy to apply. There are a variety of sheet mask manufacturers out there that offer a variety of masks targeting different functions. The most common would be hydration, acne, anti-aging, and detoxifying. Typically, a sheet mask gets left on the face for 15-20 minutes and once removed the user would massage in any excess serum.
Other forms of face masks include the more traditional gel or clay style mask, which come in a container and get applied directly to the skin. They all target a different concern you may have with your skin. Some masks are safe to leave on overnight like the Timeless Retinol Night Mask from Cara Skin Care which helps reverse visible signs of aging and promotes a more even complexion, whereas other masks may require removal after 5-10 minutes. We often forget about our lips in our beauty routines, don`t forget that exfoliating is one way to improve the texture of your lips but there are lip masks out there as well. MaskerAide created a mask that is great to wear while you`re doing the rest of your routine.
Toner is often misunderstood and therefore is frequently left out of the routine. Many consider toner as a pH balancer, which is not the case. Toner is an important step to help your serums and moisturizers penetrate deeper into the skin, meaning you`ll require less product and get greater results. Toners can be spritzed on the face or applied using a cotton pad. Applying them with a cotton pad assists in further cleansing the face and removing any excess residue of makeup or dirt from your skin. The Pure Essence Toner from Cara Skin Care offers properties that help to heal and reduce inflammation in the skin, making it a great choice for anyone suffering from acne or acne scarring.
Serums are your powerhouse ingredient in any skin care routine. They work deep below the surface of the skin to promote healing and cellular turnover. They can be formulated to reduce redness like the HydraCalm Serum or they can help reverse signs of aging like the Bio-Peptide Serum. As with masks, all serums will target a specific skin concern so ensure that you do your research to know which area you most wish to improve. You can use multiple skin serums by layering them, however we recommend no more than two at once or your pores can become clogged. We recommend using one serum in the morning and one at night for best results.
Moisturizer is an absolute MUST in any skin care routine. Your skin needs hydration to survive. Without it, your skin will be dry, dehydrated and become flaky. As we age, we require different ingredients in our moisturizer to assist in keeping those fine lines and wrinkles at bay. An oilier skin type may want to use something to combat oils like the Pure Citrus Day Cream while someone with dry skin will want to consider using HydraCell Hyaluronic Day and Night Cream.
Primer can include hydrating properties, or it can help even out redness, but its basic function is to create a smooth and even surface for your makeup. If you've never tried a skin primer before, then you don’t know what you're missing out on. We'd recommend checking out the Bodyography Veil Primer. It's a game changer.
Whether you wear makeup or not, steps 1 through 6 are key to maintaining healthy, youthful skin. If you don't have some of these steps in your current skin care routine, try adding them in. We're sure you'll notice the difference.
